You will need
- 4 squares of plain chocolate
- 2 tbsp of demerara sugar
- 3 tbsp of good quality cocoa powder
- Three 12g (1/2oz) candy canes
- Mini marshmallows
- Empty spice or jam jar (ours is H8xW6xD8cm)
- Rolling pin
- Sandwich bag
- Paper, or a large gift tag
All ingredients and baking supplies can be bought from Tesco grocery and Tesco Direct.
Clean your chosen jar, and sterilise it by filling with recently boiled water, swilling and emptying before drying it well with a towel or kitchen roll.
Grate the four squares of plain chocolate and spoon it into the jar. Using the tablespoon, layer the demerara sugar on top of the grated chocolate, and then the cocoa powder, being careful not to mix the ingredients together.
Place the candy canes in the sandwich bag and crush them into a coarse powder using the rolling pin. Spoon two tablespoons of the crushed candy on top of the cocoa powder.
Top the jar up with a handful of mini marshmallows and close the lid firmly.
Write out the instructions to make the hot chocolate onto the gift tag:
“Pour into a heavy-based pan with 600ml (1 pt) milk and bring to the boil, stirring continually. Pour into two mugs and enjoy the best hot chocolate ever!”
Fasten the gift tag to the top of the jar using the ribbon, and gift the gourmet hot chocolate to your friends and family. They can also make wonderful Christmas table favours.
