Easy Valentine's Day card for kids

Who knew sponges, toilet roll tubes and cotton buds could be used for printing?

Follow this easy step-by-step guide from craft blogger Laura who blogs at Bugs & Fishes.

You will need:

  • A4 white paper & A4 white card
  • A range of sponges (Laura used kitchen sponges and make-up sponges)
  • Cotton buds or eraser-topped pencils
  • Toilet roll or kitchen roll tubes
  • Thick cardboard
  • Acrylic paints
  • Marker pen
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick and PVA glue
  • Paintbrushes
  • Heart shapes template sheet – download the printable here

Step 1

Cut out circles from thick card using the template provided. Cut out one for each stamp that you will make.

Step 2

Draw heart shapes with a marker pen on the make-up sponges and kitchen sponges then cut them out.

Step 3

Stick each heart shape to a separate piece of circular card using PVA glue. Leave to dry.

Step 4

Draw a teardrop shape with a marker pen on a kitchen sponge and cut out. Tip: two teardrop shapes printed side by side makes a large heart.

Step 5

Bend an empty toilet roll or kitchen roll tube to make a heart shape.

Step 6

Cut out a few large hearts from white paper using the template.

Step 7

Use paper plates as paint palettes – you can just throw them in the recycling bin afterwards.

Tip: To make the colour purple, mix some blue and red paint together. To make the pink, mix red with white paint.

Step 8

Lay the plain white heart shape on top of another piece of paper and start printing. Dip the printing stamps you made previously into the paint and cover the heart shape.

Step 9

Once dry, fold A4 sheets of card and glue one heart to the front of each card.
