How to make an ice dye cushion cover

Try this amazing ice-dyeing technique to create a stylish one-of-a-kind cushion cover.

You will need

  • A white or cream cotton cushion cover
  • A deep oven tray with rack
  • Plastic gloves
  • Powder dye in 3 colours – we’re using yellow, orange and purple
  • A spoon
  • Table salt
  • A bag of large ice cubes
  • Warm soapy water
  • An iron

Step 1

Mix together 1 litre of warm water with 5 tablespoons of table salt, and soak the cushion cover. This ensures the dye sticks to the fabric, and prevents it from fading.

Wring out the cushion cover and place on the baking tray rack, then cover in ice cubes.

Tip: Try scrunching up the cushion cover for an interesting effect.

Step 3

Wearing your plastic gloves, sprinkle a teaspoon of each dye in rows over the ice to create a graduated effect.

Tip: For a more intense colour, use more dye powder.

Step 4

Leave until the ice has fully melted – overnight is best.

Step 5

Once the ice has completely melted, rinse the cushion cover in cold water, then hand wash in warm soapy water until any excess dye has been rinsed out and the water runs clear.

Leave the cushion cover to dry, then iron it to get rid of any creases and seal in the colour.
